Monkton Elm & the Environment

Here at Monkton Elm we take environmental issues & recycling seriously and do what we can to reduce our own carbon footprint. A lot of our stock is either delivered in cardboard boxes or wrapped in plastic so we can ensure that we recycle as much as we can on site. We have a machine which bails cardboard and plastics which we then pass on to our local recycling plant. Once we have unpacked a delivery of stock any suitable sized boxes are taken to our till area so your purchases can be packed. We also use any bubble wrap packaging in this way.

We have a policy not to give away plastic carrier bags but hold some biodegradable carrier’s in-store if customers request one. We offer an alternative in our Monkton Elm ‘BAG FOR LIFE’ which we sell for £1.99 each and are currently ‘buy one get one free!’ These reusable bags are aimed to encourage you to use it every time you shop with us and therefore reduce the need for us to issue new carrier bags.

Did you know we also have public recycling bins located in our car park for the collection of clothing and paper? We also offer plastic pot recycling, where customers can drop off used plant pots to be recycled along with all the plastic pots and trays that we have left over ourselves. We are also happy for customers or schools to help themselves to any of these used pots, so they can be re-used!

Products that help you to help the environment

Our product range contains lots of ideas for you to reduce your carbon footprint – here are a few;

Water butts - These are an increasingly popular recycling opportunity. They store rainwater for cost effective garden watering and are available in different sizes including space saving options for smaller gardens. Collect rainwater and save money on your water bill!

Compost Bins - A great way to dispose of your household and garden waste and turn it into something useful. Available in 220 & 330 litre capacities these bins are made from recycled plastic and when they come to the end of their life span they are also recyclable!

Incinerators
– Why fill countless plastic bags with leaves, branches etc.. and then use your fuel to transport it to local tips when you could just burn it right there in your own garden.

Log makers
– Turn your unwanted newspapers, magazines and junk mail into easily burnable logs. The paper logs produced will burn on an open fire, log burner, chiminea or firepits, giving you FREE heat energy.
