Schoolchildren learn how to felt with expert
PUPILS from a primary school in Somerset learnt how to felt with an expert from a Craft Centre in the county last Monday (July 12, 2010).

Debbie Angeras, a team member at the Craft Centre at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, taught pupils at North Petherton Primary School the craft as part of their annual Art Week.

Sarah Penfold, Year Three Teacher at North Petherton Primary School, said: “We were delighted that Debbie attended the school to teach pupils how to felt. During our annual Art Week children are shown and taught a variety of arts and crafts.

“The pupils really enjoyed the felting lesson and we hope Debbie will attend the school again.”

Debbie demonstrated how to wet felt. This is a method of making felt using wool tops, warm water and olive oil soap. Small groups of pupils each produced a felt square. The squares will all be joined together to make a large wall hanging to be displayed in the school hall.

Debbie added: “I enjoyed teaching the children how to wet felt as part of their school’s annual Art Week. I hope some of the pupils take up the craft as it is lots of fun and you can make all sorts of things using felt.”

The specialist Craft Centre was created to serve the needs of the area’s keen and potential card-makers, scrapbookers, patchworkers, quilters, cross stitchers, canvas embroiderers, knitters and bead crafters.
