New urban seed collection comes to Somerset...
A SOMERSET garden centre has this month (February, 2010) been selected to stock an exclusive range of vegetable seeds created specifically for town gardens and to be grown in small plots, containers or on windowsills.

The seeds, which are endorsed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, have been supplied by Thompson and Morgan to Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, which is located at Monkton Heathfield between Bridgwater and Taunton.

Norma Moore, General Manager of the independent, family-run garden centre, explained: “We’re delighted to be able to offer our customers this new range of vegetable seeds known as the Kew Urban Garden Vegetable Collection.

“The collection, which features varieties from dwarf runner beans to salad leaves, offers a comprehensive range of seeds suitable for both the seasoned horticulturalist and the enthusiastic novice gardener, who don’t have space in their gardens for vegetable plots. With increasing concerns about where food has come from and how it has been treated, there’s never been a better time to start growing your own produce.

The Kew Urban Garden Vegetable Collection is designed for those living in modern houses or apartments with small gardens or balconies. The varieties that have been selected to be included in the Collection are easy to grow.

Norma added: “Grow Your Own is going to be big this year. People with everything from allotments to patios will be looking to produce food from their outdoor spaces to help with the spiralling costs of supermarket shopping. They are also realising that home-grown produce tastes better and is healthier for you.

“Customers tell us that one of their pet hates is plastic bags of limp lettuce leaves and they want to try growing their own salad crops instead. Salad leaves are one of the fastest and easiest things to grow. You can enjoy a constant supply of fresh, crisp and tasty salads throughout the summer.

“The Kew Urban Range collection of seeds will produce plants that will not only look good growing in your garden, but also taste good when you cook them.”

The seeds are available by mail order. For further details including prices and post and packaging information, please call the garden centre.
