The first weekend in August saw us take part in our 34th annual Taunton Flower Show. Our display garden is, as usual, the result of many months of planning and is a very important part of our summer calendar. We have had many interesting and unusual themes over the years, including the recent ‘Nectar Bar’ in a bee friendly garden and the wonderful ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ display that seemed to capture everyone's imagination. This year our garden was titled ‘Another Room’. We wanted to showcase a modern size garden (ie. small) and prove that it can still be used as a practical and enjoyable space.
The garden won a Large Gold award as well as ‘Best in Show’, and we are all very proud of it. We were overwhelmed by everyone's positive comments about the garden, both at the show and on social media.
As part of the show, we ran a free competition to win £100 to spend at Monkton Elm. We had hundreds of entrants and the lucky winner was Penny White, who is looking forward to treating herself!
The colour palate both for planting and features was chosen to reflect modern styles and we tried to use new varieties of plants where possible. The main features of the garden were a stylish corner summer house, styled as an office, granite benches which framed our centre piece Olive tree and several water features. The garden also contained a large Hibernaculum which was handmade by our in-house carpenter. Each end contained large bug hotels, the roof was planted as a living roof and inside there was room for bins and tool storage. This was built to show that beauty, care for nature and practicality can go hand in hand even in a small space.
